The villagers
“Rožkalni village in the Rencēni area is a unique place where people live and work as a community. They cultivate thirty hectares of land, care for cows and poultry, produce wholesome food, and engage in various handicrafts. While officially classified as a deinstitutionalization project that provides services to individuals with intellectual disabilities, Rožkalni fosters a warm and inclusive environment. The support staff fondly refer to these individuals as “ciemnieki“ (community members), embracing them as part of daily life—through work, joy, and challenges alike.”

Bio farm as a bridge and community
In one rhythm with nature, where a bridge is built between two worlds – the physical and the invisible – in a supportive environment.
“The ecological farm Camphill “Rožkalni” was founded 25 years ago. Unlike typical farms, it operates as a community. In this socially therapeutic village, social care workers and their families, along with adults with mental disabilities, actively participate in growing high-quality food using organic and biodynamic farming methods. Rhythm plays a crucial role at Rožkalni. Having a structured plan and making steady progress, even in small steps, is key. Each resident is unique and excels in their own way, contributing according to their abilities.”

“Rožkalni” community is celebrating 20 years
“Today, a community celebrates its 20th anniversary, providing a home for young people with special needs—not in a traditional nursing facility, but on a real farm with cows in the paddock and chickens in the coop. While the Camphill movement is recognized worldwide with hundreds of villages, “Rožkalni” remains the only one of its kind in Latvia.”

The Camphill village “Rožkalni” provides a home for individuals with intellectual disabilities
“Next spring it will be 20 years since Latvia’s first Camphill village “Rožkalni” was established in Burtnieki Municipality. It provides a home for people with intellectual disabilities. Together with social workers and volunteers, they take care of the farm and carry out various daily tasks.”
